2017 MAZDA CX-3: SUBCOMPACT CROSSOVER WITH SPIRIT
by Arv Voss

Mazda's CX-3 is bigger than both the Mazda2 and the Mazda3 5-door hatchbacks, but is smaller than the Mazda CX-5 crossover. An ideally sized crossover, the Mazda CX-3 Grand Touring (GT) that we tested, even as the smallest iteration of Mazda's SKYACTIV-generation lineup, may well be one of its mightiest.

WHAT'S NEW
The Mazda CX-3 comes in three levels of trim: the entry-level base model CX-3 Sport; next, the core model, the mid-range CX-3 Touring; and the top-of-the-line Mazda CX-3 GT. All feature the SKYACTIV technologies found on the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3, which share a similar platform, but the CX-3 is significantly smaller.

For 2017, the mid-level CX-3 Touring adopts 18-inch wheels, trickling down from the Grand Touring trim level, and the Grand Touring. The i-ACTIVSENSE package of safety features now costs less than the outgoing model. It features Mazda Radar Cruise Control, automatic Smart City Brake Support and Smart Brake Support, Lane Departure Warning, High Beam Control, automatic on/off headlights and rain-sensing wipers.

In addition, there are now two option packages:

Package #1 - the Touring Premium Package: Bose audio 7-speaker sound system, Power Moonroof with one-touch open, Sirius XM satellite radio and HD Radio; and a tonneau cover.

Package #2 - the GT i-ACTIVSENSE Package mentioned above

Performance
Power for all Mazda CX-3 variants is provided by a 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G, DOHC, 16-valve, inline four-cylinder engine with gasoline Direct Injection that delivers 146 horsepower at 6,000 rpm, while generating 146 pound feet of torque at 2,800 rpm. The engine is coupled to a SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed automatic with electronic lockup torque converter, manual shift mode and Sport mode, that gears motive energy to the front wheels or to all four wheels via Mazda's predictive i-ACTIV AWD System. A six-speed manual gearbox is also available.

In terms of its performance, the all-new Mazda CX-3 with its 2.0-liter SKYACTIV-G 146 horsepower, four-cylinder engine delivers a gasoline engine compression ratio of 13:0:1. Would turbocharging enhance the performance? You bet, but not without sacrificing some fuel economy. The handling characteristics are crisp and sporty, with a positive on-center feel and flat, stable ride during challenging and spirited maneuvers.

Comfort and Convenience
All CX-3 models also come with MAZDA CONNECT, a seven-inch, full-color touchscreen infotainment suite that is integrated with a commander control knob and Bluetooth hands-free phone pairing and audio streaming. All 2017 CX-3s also have backup camera and push-button starter as well as power windows, power door locks and remote keyless entry.

The 2017 Mazda CX-3 will be just the right size CUV for many consumers and will serve ideally from traversing cityscapes to more adventurous landscape sojourns. The seating hits the sweet spot in a variety of ways - by providing a clear view of surroundings, by mitigating the feeling of speed (a good thing for some, for others, not so much), by eliminating the distraction of the lights of oncoming vehicles and ease of entry and exit.

SUMMER DRIVING CARRIES FALSE SENSE OF SECURITY

Summer doesn't officially begin until late June, but let's face it: Memorial Day is when it all begins. Barbecues, cruising under the stars on warm nights and road trips all get rolling then.

Indulge of course, but first take a moment to consider driving safely. Alarmingly, summer is the most dangerous time of year to drive. Summer is when automobile crashes involving teenagers spikes dramatically compared with the rest of the year. Thirty-six percent of all auto fatalities occur during summer compared with 28 percent during winter.

Consider this: Two in three drivers feel safer driving during the summer thanks in part to better road conditions and nicer weather, and 81 percent of people said they drive with less vigilance in the summertime. Added to this, drivers are three times less likely to be vigilant on the road during summer months compared with winter ones; we're not as focused on our immediate surroundings.

"It's absolutely critical to remain alert and vigilant when getting behind the wheel this summer," said Sarah Robinson, driving safety expert at Michelin. "Once you prepare your vehicle and tires for your summer travels, remember that the most important safety feature in the car is the driver. Preparation and high situational awareness go a long way to preventing a bad situation altogether."

Robinson offers the following tips when hitting the road this summer:

• Get a checkup: Just like you do when preparing for winter, make sure your car is in tip-top shape. Fluid levels, engine oil condition, wiper health, headlights, battery - it all needs a once-over. You can click here to make an appointment with service.

• Stay back: Maintain a safe following distance from the vehicle ahead of you. This is a critical defensive-driving practice and could be the difference between avoiding an accident or being part of it. (Check out the Driver's Defensive Class offered through Schwartz in this newsletter.)

• Focus: Don't allow yourself the distractions of texting, app usage or even reaching back to pet Fido. Eyes on the road.

• Carry an emergency kit: Include items such as jumper cables, a flashlight and extra batteries, reflective triangles, a first-aid kit, water and nonperishable food items. Make sure you've got your roadside assistance provider's phone number along with any other emergency contacts.

• Take a break: Pull over every few hours to stretch your legs and rest. If you feel sleepy, take a longer break until you're alert again.

So get out there and have fun - just remember to stay safe.

MAZDA 2017 CX-5 OUT ON A
Mazdausa.com

Following its
much anticipated arrival in dealerships,
Mazda North American Operations is taking
the all-new 2017 Mazda
CX-5 on a fifteen-city, nationwide
"Experience the All-New 2017
Mazda CX-5" tour where
prospective customers will have
the opportunity to understand why driving a Mazda is so special, all while experiencing Mazda's latest approach to craftsmanship, engineering and design, and how that's embodied in the all-new
CX-5.

The cross-country tour will include "Intercept" events, or the more traditional ride and drive experience at a set location and "Mastercraft" events, which will feature special events in Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Chicago, inviting Mazda owners to explore the "Mastercraft" behind
a certain product or craft that aligns with the Mazda brand.

"Our goal is to engage our audience in an impactful way, in a location that's convenient and familiar to them," said Russell Wager, vice president of marketing for Mazda North American Operations. "By allowing our customers to engage with our brand and our vehicles in
an environment that is fun and interactive, we create the
opportunity for potential customers
to experience our personality as a brand. Ultimately, we hope they
have such a great time during their drive experience that they consider joining the Mazda family, when searching for their next vehicle."

Participants of the "Intercept" component will be guided through
the city on a quest to learn more about the vehicle and the unique Mazda driving experience. During
the tour, participants will learn first-hand how a lighter vehicle can ultimately make the drive more fun; that safety features can enhance, and not overtake, the driving experience; how technology can
help support the driving experience, not take away from it; and how Mazda's Jinba Ittai driving
philosophy directly translates to the driver's everyday experience in the vehicle.

2017 MAZDA 3
CAR&DRIVER
by Mike Sutton

One of our Favorite Compacts, under the microscope.

With its sophisticated design and excellent driving dynamics, the Mazda 3 is one of our favorite small cars-a multi-time 10 Best Cars winner, in fact. The 3 is arguably the sharpest looker in its class, particularly in hatchback form, and its cockpit is a driver's delight, with fluid primary controls, upscale trappings, and thoughtful ergonomics. It may not be the newest or the largest or the quickest of its type, but the 3 shines brighter than most of its rivals on back roads, and with minimal compromise to comfort and practicality. Few cars at any price can blend such laudable virtues together with the cohesion of the Mazda, let alone with the 3's trophy case of comparison-test wins to back it up.

What's New for 2017?
The 3's refresh for 2017 is relatively mild, including subtle nips and tucks to the front and rear, plus additional sound insulation for the lightly revised interior. A new steering wheel similar to that in Mazda's CX-9 crossover can be heated, while nicer materials grace the door panels and seats. The optional head-up display is now rendered with color graphics, and a new camera has been added to the active safety system for improved automated emergency braking. Mazda's new G-Vectoring Control technology, which cuts the engine's torque on corner entry to sharpen the 3's turn-in response, is standard on all models.

Trims and Options We'd Choose

We prefer the more shapely and more versatile hatchback body in GT spec with the standard six-speed manual transmission, which starts at $24,770-$700 more than a comparable sedan (add another $1050 for the six-speed automatic). The GT's fancier trim and greater level of equipment do the most to elevate the Mazda closer to premium-car territory. Standard kit on the GT includes 18-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, power-and-heated exterior mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, a head-up display, and an upgraded Bose nine-speaker stereo.

Other noteworthy features include:
• 184-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder      engine
• Leather upholstery
• Heated front seats
• Power sunroof
• Blind-spot monitoring with rear
  cross-traffic alert

50 YEARS OF REVOLUTION
Where it all began, the Mazda Cosmo Sport…
Without the rotary engine, there would probably be no Mazda. And without Mazda, the rotary engine certainly wouldn't have been in production for nearly 50 years. It was Mazda's engineers who took Felix Wankel's unique engine design concept to fruition, and commercial success, five decades ago this year.

A rotary engine is smaller and lighter than a conventional piston engine, with a superior power-to-weight ratio. As it has no reciprocating parts-just a three-sided rotor spinning in a housing-it is quieter and smoother as well. The rotary also offers outstanding performance for a given displacement. This was a big carrot to a company full of car enthusiasts.

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY

While other carmakers had tried and failed to make the rotary engine a success, Mazda doggedly refused to let the challenges of this complex power plant get in its way. The recurring problem was scratching-nicknamed "devil's claw marks"-on the inner surface of the engine casing. This was caused by the apex seals on the triangular rotor juddering, instead of sliding smoothly, against the inner casing. This scoring led to poor seal durability, and caused the early demise of rotary proposals from many other automotive manufacturers.

Mazda's engineers, led by Kenichi Yamamoto, eventually not only solved the problem with a graphite-aluminum alloy seal, but also overcame other drawbacks, such as excessive oil consumption and a lack of low-end torque. At long last, the rotary engine became feasible in real-world ownership, combining reliability with spectacular power for its size.

This winning combination led to significant sales success for Mazda in the 1970s. Around 100,000 rotary-powered cars were sold in the U.S. in 1972 alone, and the rest of that decade saw half of Mazda's car production powered by the rotary engine. (read more)

Kenichi Yamamoto The project lead engineer's hard work was duly rewarded: he later became president and chairman of Mazda.

CX-FIVE THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THE NEXT-GENERATION MAZDA CX-5
MazdaUSA.com

At the Los Angeles Auto Show in November, Mazda debuted its all-new 2017 CX-5 compact crossover, supplanting its best-seller in the U.S. with a more refined, upscale people-mover that shares much of its aesthetics with the larger CX-9.

Outside of its luscious, brand-new Soul Red Crystal paint color, the biggest to-do with the vehicle came from the announcement of the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel engine making its way to the U.S. toward the end of 2017. But there's plenty more to talk about, so we've gathered some of the most frequently asked questions concerning the
2017 CX-5 in one place.

SO IS IT REALLY ALL-NEW?

The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is dimensionally similar to the right-sized 2016 model, but it has an extensive number of changes, including its engine (the 2.2-liter SKYACTIV-D engine will be all-new for North America), transmission (quicker-shifting, more responsive) and new ball-bearing rear differential on all-wheel-drive models (redesigned for less friction, better efficiency and greater strength). It also has a 16-percent stiffer body than its predecessor, all-new suspension tuning, more acoustic tuning and a completely redesigned interior and exterior.

Yeah, for all intents and purposes, without a stone left unturned, it's all-new.

WHAT WAS THE 2017 CX-5
BENCHMARKED AGAINST?
In large part, the CX-5 was benchmarked against its award-winning bigger brother, the second-generation CX-9. The CX-5 adopted much of the CX-9's lauded sound absorption technology to cosset drivers and passengers with little outside noise. But with its new G-Vectoring Control (the first all-wheel-drive application in the U.S.), customers can rest assured that it will handle as well as Mazdas always have.

That said, while its acoustic treatment was set against the CX-9, the CX-5 was put up against class-above rivals that compete in luxury categories rather than mainstream compact crossovers when it came time to look outside the company. That includes the CX-5's upscale interior and BOSE® Premium audio system.

And, of course, engineers looked toward the dynamic benchmark in the compact crossover class-the previous-generation CX-5. When creating the 2017 CX-5, engineers and designers were inspired by the tagline "One class above" to create their ideal family crossover.

WE LISTENED TO CUSTOMERS FOR WHAT THEY WANTED

Standard LED headlights and tail lights-same as the MX-5 Miata roadster and CX-9 midsize crossover SUV: Check. Available power liftgate: Check. Full-speed active cruise control: Check. Available windshield-projected head-up display: Check. Wider-swinging rear doors: Check. Reclining rear seatbacks: Check. Second-row air conditioning and heating vents: Check. Available heated rear seats, heated steering wheel and USB charging ports in the back: Check.

These are but a few of the new equipment additions in the
2017 Mazda CX-5. We've got you covered.

BUT THAT RED PAINT, THOUGH

We're going to let you finish, but we have to explain. Yes, it's a real color that you'll be able to buy.Developed using processes learned during the development of Soul Red Metallic and Machine Gray Metallic, the all-new Soul Red Crystal paint color was created to highlight the subtler, sophisticated curves of the next-generation KODO-Soul of Motion design language. Like Soul Red Metallic, Soul Red Crystal is still a three-coat paint process, but it's approximately 20-percent brighter and has a 50-percent greater depth than its predecessor. Unlike Soul Red Metallic, all of the aluminum flakes in the paint are uniform size and are pointed in the same direction, giving Soul Red Crystal a look as though it were flowing magma.

It is the same color that was shown previously on the RX-VISION concept car, yet instead of the many, many stages in which that car was painted, it's scalable for mass production. And after CX-5, it will eventually grace every Mazda model sold in the U.S. as a premium paint option.

GIMME! GIMME! WHEN CAN I GET ONE?

The first-generation Mazda CX-5 was no slouch, having won rival publications Car and Driver and Motor Trend's 2016/2017 crossover SUV comparisons just months apart from one another. These publications are like the Capulets and Montagues-they don't often agree with one another. Yet, they both came to the same conclusion that the 2016.5 CX-5 was the best of the bunch-even when compared with newer models. It speaks volumes about how strong the outgoing vehicle was.

And with the myriad of upgrades made to the
all-new 2017 CX-5, Mazda will surely keep on its path of winning the hearts of consumers who care about loving what they drive.

The 2017 CX-5 is scheduled to go on sale in early spring, with SKYACTIV-D 2.2 models going on sale toward the end of the year. Prices will be announced closer to the CX-5's on-sale date; expect them to start at a similar point to today's automatic-equipped CX-5 Sport, powered by the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 gasoline engine.

Mazda named Manufacturer of the Year in the 2017 AM Awards
Automotive World

Mazda has lifted the title of Manufacturer of the Year at the 2017 Automotive Management Awards.

Following the fourth-generation MX-5′s unprecedented clean sweep of victories last year - taking the 2016 World Car of the Year, 2016 World Car Design of the Year and 2016 UK Car of the Year awards - it's clear that Mazda's driver-focused approach to its current model range is finding favor with judging panels and the general public alike.

In 2016, Mazda recorded 2.4 per cent year-on-year sales growth with retail sales increasing by 10 per cent in a UK market.

Mazda maintains a highly focused automotive philosophy which links every model in the company's new-generation line-up. Its standout KODO - Soul of Motion design approach and its unique SKYACTIV Technology deliver entirely human-centered design and engineering ensuring Mazda's customers benefit from elegant, refined, and efficient cars.

Commenting on the Mazda brand, Automotive Management's panel of judges said: "They're now a brand of great cars, not just the one. Attractive, reliable, and great to drive, if you weren't familiar with the brand, or it was hidden from you, you'd think you were driving one of the premium brands".

Collecting the award Peter Allibon, Sales Director of Mazda UK said, "We are absolutely delighted to have our unique approach to automotive design and engineering recognized through the winning of such a prestigious award.' And Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director Mazda UK added "everything we do at Mazda is dedicated to making things better for our customers and our range of stylish, spirited and we are very happy that our great to drive cars continues to win praise from media and our customers alike."

Mazda Mx-5 Rf With Retractable Hard Top Makes Global Debut
MazdaUSA.com

Having an MX-5
makes life richer and more fun. With this small, convertible sports car, we want to offer even more people a fun-filled life through driving pleasure.

Many people who would love to own a convertible end up choosing a car with a fixed hardtop roof instead. Hoping to share the wonder and thrill that come with putting the top down with this kind of customer, we offered a Power Retractable Hardtop for the first time on the third-generation MX-5. The first and second generations had both offered a detachable hardtop, but with its motor-driven retractable roof, the third-generation model made the joy of open-top driving accessible to a wider range of people and was a hit with customers around the world. With the hardtop  version of the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5, we stayed true to our aim of making open-top driving more accessible, but freed ourselves from traditional ways of thinking and took on new challenges in order to create something completely new, the Mazda MX-5 RF.

Electric Truck Sales to
Surpass a Third of a Million
by 2026

TruckingNewsOnline
According to a new report from Navigant Research, global annual electrified powertrain medium- and heavy-duty truck sales are expected to grow from about 31,000 vehicles in 2016 to nearly 332,000 by 2026.

The report forecasts sales of medium- and heavy-duty trucks for each major world region - segmented by electrified powertrain type, including hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell - through 2026.

As local and national governments impose stricter emissions targets for commercial vehicles, they are also looking for ways to incentivize fleets to invest in medium- and heavy-duty fuel efficiency technologies as well as cleaner-burning fuels.

Though conventional diesel-powered vehicles are becoming cleaner and more efficient, the added initial and operating costs associated with these changes are helping to reduce the incremental cost of moving to electric-assisted and all-electric powertrains.

"New and established suppliers are starting to offer alternative powertrains as well as complete electric vehicles for niche applications," says David Alexander, senior research analyst with Navigant Research. "Limited daily range and a drive cycle featuring a lot of stopping and starting are applications that benefit most from electric drive capabilities, and delivery and refuse collection vehicles are expected to be the primary targets in the short term."

Technology advances and production experience in the bus market can be transferred readily to trucks, and the growing demand for electric cars has stimulated investment in battery manufacture that has resulted in falling battery pack costs, according to the report. However, even with these positive factors, electric drive trucks are still expected to remain a niche market, at around 5 percent of sales in 2026.

The report - Electric Drive Trucks - breaks the forecasts for the global truck market into medium-duty trucks and heavy-duty trucks for each major world region. Both of these vehicle categories are assessed for potential sales of electrified powertrain types: hybrid (gasoline and diesel), plug-in hybrid (gasoline and diesel), battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell.

Eating Right Isn't Complicated
Reviewed by Sharon Denny, MS, RDN
EatRight.org
Eating right doesn't have to be complicated - simply begin to shift to healthier food and beverage choices. These recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans can help get you started.

·       Emphasize fruit, vegetables, whole grains and low fat or fat-free milk and milk products.

·       Include lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs and nuts.

·       Make sure your diet is low in saturated fats, Trans fats, salt (sodium) and added sugars.

Make Your Calories Count

Think nutrient-rich rather than "god" or "bad" foods. The majority of your food choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients, and lower in calories. Making smart food choices can help you stay healthy, manage your weight and be physically active.

Focus on Variety

Eat a variety of foods from all the food groups to get the nutrients your body needs. Fruits and vegetables can be fresh, frozen or canned. Eat more dark green vegetables such as leafy greens and broccoli and orange vegetables including carrots and sweet potatoes. Vary your protein choices with more fish, beans and peas. Eat at least 3 ounces of whole-grain cereals, breads, crackers, rice or pasta every day.

Know Your Fats

Look for foods low in saturated fats and trans fats to help reduce your risk of heart disease. Most of the fats you eat should be monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils. Check the Nutrition Facts panel on food labels for total fat and saturated fat.

2017 Play Car of the Year:
Mazda MX-5 Miata
Cars.com
By Joe Wiesenfelder

If you want a car that's fun to drive, you have man

y choices, but few come close to the MX-5, better known  as the Miata. You'll see its mix of a front engine with rear-wheel drive and balanced weight distribution elsewhere, but few cars of that description manage to be as fun in everyday driving as the Miata is. Lightweight and excellent feedback give it an involving character that heavier models don't match. Combine that with the inherent fun of a convertible and you have a singular entity - an affordable one - even in today's crowded market.

Many aspects make the Miata a triumph, starting with an affordable price that gets you everything that makes a Miata fun to drive. The middle trim level, Club, has a sport suspension with Bilstein shock absorbers and a limited-slip differential, but you're not giving up much without them. Even the optional six-speed automatic transmission performs very well, but if you're not getting the manual, you ought to rethink your life and how you live it. The 2016 redesign brought a substantially lighter and smaller but roomier car with a blissfully easily operated manual top. The Miata's strengths seem countless.

Mazda Aiming to be First With Breakthrough HCCI Engine

High-mileage version of SkyActiv engine readying for next-gen Mazda3
by Paul A. Eisenstein

Barring a sudden shift by the new Trump Administration, automakers are facing a tough federal fuel economy target for 2025, and that has them looking at a variety of ways to deliver book mileage gains over the next few years.

Along with various battery-based technologies, a number of exotic internal combustion technologies are vying for acceptance, including a concept known as the homogeneous-charge compression ignition, or HCCI, engine. Combining attributes of the diesel but powered by gasoline, and promising major improvements in efficiency, HCCI may finally be ready for prime time.

According to a report by Japan's Nikkei Asian Review, Mazda and another, unnamed manufacturer plant launch an engine using HCCI technology late in 2018. Set to be used in the little Mazda3, the new SkyActiv engine is expected to deliver as much as a 30% bump in fuel economy compared to a comparable, conventional gas engine.

By one estimate, that would mean as much as 70 miles per gallon using the Japanese fuel-efficiency test, though the number would likely drop somewhere into the 50s using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency test cycle.

2017 MAZDA CX-5 FIRST LOOK: REDESIGNING A SEGMENT LEADER
MotorTrend
by Alex Nishimoto

The Mazda CX-5 introduced the world to the Kodo design language in 2012. Not only was the CX-5 easy on the eyes, it was also a fun-to-drive breath of fresh air in a segment nearly devoid of excitement. A lot has changed in the compact crossover class since then, and the CX-5 is evolving to keep up with its competitors.

The 2017 Mazda CX-5, is the first of a new generation but hasn't strayed too far from the original.

The CX-5 was new for the 2013 model year and was even recently refreshed for 2016.

But the 2017 CX-5 is fully redesigned, according to Mazda. Look closely at it from the side and you'll notice the 2017 model's more raked rear end and slimmer taillights. In front, the CX-5 sports sleeker headlights and the new corporate face we've seen on the CX-9 and Mazda3, with a chrome grille frame that outlines the bottom of the grille and spills into the headlights. Helping to accentuate the CX-5's fresh lines is a new multi-layer Soul Red Crystal paint color.

The dash gets the free-standing infotainment screen we've seen on other Mazda models, and the HVAC vents now feature a different shape. Other than that, though, it appears the cabin design carries over from last year's model.

The new CX-5 was developed with the goal of creating a vehicle all can enjoy-even the passengers. The compact crossover gets Mazda's corner-smoothing G-Vectoring Control for the driver's enjoyment, but the cabin prioritizes passenger comfort and quietness. The powertrain lineup for North America will include the Skyactiv-G 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter gas engines, which make 155 hp and 184 hp, respectively, in the outgoing crossover. Mazda also lists the 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine for North America.

The 2017 Mazda CX-5 will go on sale in Japan in February 2017, followed by other global markets later in the year.

Thank you Asbury Park Press & our loyal customers for awarding Schwartz Mazda as the Best New Car Dealer and Best Used Car Dealer! We are proud to serve the community!

Mazda CX-9 Named Car of the Year

The Mazda CX-9 has won the overall AMI Insurance NZ Autocar Car of the Year award for 2016.
After a day of back-to-back testing with the five other cars, the CX-9 amassed more points than its rivals to claim the title. It was also the winner of the AMI Insurance Safety Award.

Mazda's new CX-9 was praised by the judges for its outstanding value, the new model bringing improved safety, more luxury, and enhanced drivability and economy from its clever turbocharged engine, while still delivering the family friendly features of a large seven-seater.

The judging process rewards the car that is best across all criteria, not just majoring in a few of them, and the CX-9 had no real area of weakness.

For safety, specification, build quality and overall value, it scored well, as it did on practicality. It's very user friendly yet it also scored well on the performance front, judges acknowledging the new engine both from a power and economy standpoint, while gaining good marks for refinement, ride and NVH.

The CX-9 was also the winner of the AMI Insurance Safety Award, recognizing advancements in passive and active safety features.

The win is seen as the democratization of advanced safety features, as there are still many six-figure luxury cars with less standard fit safety systems than the CX-9.

Mazda includes the usual ESP, airbags and reversing camera in the CX-9, as well as autonomous emergency city braking, blind spot monitoring and cross traffic alert on all models, while the Limited Edition comes with radar cruise, adaptive LEDs, active lane keeping, a heads-up display and also a driver attention alert.

The previous CX-9 was not ANCAP crash tested but this new one has achieved a full five stars, with a score of 35.87 out of a possible 37 points.

To determine the overall Car of the Year Award winner, each class-winning car is driven by a panel of six judges over the same drive loop, and each is scored out of 100 points covering five criteria.

These take into account design (which also includes safety), performance (not only how well it goes but what impact it has on fuel reserves), driving dynamics (how it corners, rides and overall refinement), practicality (accommodation, ergos, versatility) and value (specification, quality and bang for buck).

MAZDA'S FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLE PLANNED FOR 2019
by Anthony Karr
Mazda believes as much as 10 percent of new vehicle sales will be pure electric cars by the end of the decade. That's why they won't wait too long before it releases its first-ever EV.
According to Mazda's head of research and development, Kiyoshi Fujiwara, Mazda's own electric car will be introduced by 2019. Speaking to Car Advice at the ongoing Los Angeles Auto Show, he confirmed the manufacturer will reveal an EV three years from now."As you know, in Norway, the complete energy source is water… this means that EV is much better for CO2 in Norway. But not in United States or China… Therefore, we are focusing on internal combustion engines, but in some regions we need EV, so therefore in 2019 [or] in that time frame we will introduce EV where it is needed in the world."For now, Mazda will stay focused on vehicles powered by internal combustion engines (ICE), as the major part of the customers is still searching for that kind of cars."Probably by 2020 globally, five to 10 percent [of new car sales] will be pure EV, while the other 90-95 percent will still use ICE. Therefore, ICE is [still] the most important technology all over the world," Fujiwara commented.

MAZDA'S FOURTH YEAR OF FUEL EFFICIENCY

Given a choice, most people would prefer a vehicle that is efficient in fuel consumption. Four years ago, EPA declared Mazda as the automaker to have accomplished this goal. Mazda has succeeded in making this a consistent feat as Mazda was again declared to be the most fuel-efficient automaker for the fourth year in a row.
According to Auto123, Mazda has been declared by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as the most fuel efficient automaker in accordance to its latest reports on Light Duty Fuel Economy Trends. Auto123 also added that Mazda was able to achieve this feat without any electric or hybrid car to offer. This accomplishment is due to the unique technology of Mazda called
SKYACTIV that aims to reduce the weight of the vehicle, improve its engine efficiency and performance in environmental and safety aspects. Accordingly, all Mazda vehicles including the CX-5 now come with the SKYACTIV feature.
"Mazda's team of engineers and designers have worked diligently to create vehicles that are high-quality, stylish, fun-to-drive and fuel efficient," said Masahiro Moro, President and CEO of Mazda North American Operations as reported by CTV News. The result is a fuel economy of up to 29.6 miles per gallon on the average for Mazda vehicles.

WHY CAN'T ALL AFFORDABLE CARS BE AS GOOD AS THE MAZDA3?
by Jay Traugott

Clearly we like this car. There are compact sedans and hatchbacks, and then there's the Mazda3 four- and five-door combo. It's almost as if Mazda decided to build an affordable and front-wheel-drive version of a BMW. So yeah, it's fair to say that the Mazda3 is the poor man's BMW, or, perhaps, the smart and more cost-conscious buyer's BMW. Today's review is, of course, all about the 2016 Mazda3, specifically the five-door Grand Touring hatchback. Bottom line: we love this car. Whether you go for the sedan or hatch, you'll have a choice of either the standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque, or the optional 2.5-liter with 184 ponies and 185 lb-ft.

Both can be had with either a six-speed manual or six-speed slush box with paddle shifters. But trust us, this car fully deserves the manual. What's always made the Mazda3 a standout is its fun-to-drive factor, a core ethos of the Japanese automaker. This third generation Mazda3 has a more premium feel than ever inside and out and, yes, it could be a BMW 2 Series and Audi A3 sedan alternative if either of those are stretching your budget.

MITSUBISHI FUSO ANNOUNCES ELECTRIC TRUCK IN 2017
Mitsubishi Fuso Truck of America recently announced during the IAA Commercial Vehicles Show in Hannover, Germany, that it will start a small production run of vehicles for several markets around the world, including the USA. The company expects the first all-electric trucks to reach the U.S. in 2017.

To prove the value of an all-electric work truck, MFTA's parent company conducted a field trial using eight prototype vehicles, with varied flatbed/stakebody and dry van bodies installed. These trucks were operated by fleet customers in Europe, where the vehicles are assembled. The fleet managers were asked to put the E-Cell trucks to use in routine service while Mitsubishi Fuso engineers closely monitored the vehicles' performance and use profiles for a full year.

An analysis of the data revealed that the FUSO eCanter work trucks required an average of 47.6 kwh/62 miles (47.6 kwh/100 km), compared to an equivalent diesel-powered Canter's average fuel consumption of 3.72 gallons/62 miles (14.08 liters/100 km).

Not only did the eight test vehicles produce impressive operating cost savings, but they also produced zero CO2 or other tailpipe emissions, and even delivered a 37-percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to diesel-powered trucks, after accounting for emissions generated by the power plants creating the electricity needed to recharge the batteries.

In addition to in-depth performance data, the company elicited customer evaluations of the vehicles' practicality, suitability for their specific operating requirements and their ease of use. Results have been quite positive, with all customers reporting that, when used as intended, the trucks performed well.

MAZDA CX-3 CARRIES STELLAR PERFORMANCE INTO NEW MODEL YEAR
By Derek Price
Cargazing.com

Mazda CX-3 captivated onlookers with its show-car-like KODO-Soul of Motion design that stood out among its staid competitors when it hit the road last year. Seventy-three of the world's most esteemed auto media jurors from around the world nominated it as a finalist for 2016 World Car Design of the Year.

But looks weren't all it over-delivered with, coddling drivers and passengers with amenities like available leather and Lux Suede two-tone seats, Mazda Radar Cruise Control and its Active Driving Display head-up unit-"Mazda Premium" features that are all but exclusive to CX-3 among its competitive set, save for much pricier competition. And CX-3 stunned them when it took on some of the most-capable vehicles in its segment and beat them at the Northwest Automotive Press Association's annual Mudfest off-road event, thanks to its predictive i-ACTIV all-wheel drive that can detect road conditions and shift power output before a driver and or passengers will ever notice.

Lineup

For 2017, CX-3 enters its second model year holding its $19,960 starting MSRP. Changes in content are subtle but include standard 18-inch alloy wheels for CX-3 Touring models-an item brought down from Grand Touring-and a lower cost of entry for Mazda's i-ACTIVSENSE Package of safety technologies in CX-3 Grand Touring-$1,170 versus last year's $1,920.

All CX-3 models come standard with a punchy, 146-horsepower SKYACTIV-G 2.0-liter engine paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, featuring Sport mode. Power is routed to either the front wheels or through all four with i-ACTIV all-wheel drive.

CX-3 Sport models come equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, power mirrors, cloth seats, a seven-inch MAZDA CONNECTTM touchscreen infotainment system with voice commands, Bluetooth phone connectivity for phone and audio streaming, a USB input, keyless entry, push-button start, power door locks, a six-speaker audio system and air conditioning, among a long list of other features.

CX-3 Touring upgrades with the aforementioned 18-inch alloy wheels, heated exterior door mirrors with integrated turn signal lamps, leatherette and cloth seating surfaces, heated front seats, leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, fold-down center armrest with built-in phone holder, Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA).

The top-level CX-3 Grand Touring includes all of those features and adds leather and Lux Suede seats, LED headlights with Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS), LED fog lights, navigation, automatic climate control, paddle shifters and more.

MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR YOUR MAZDA

10 Care Tips to Keep Your Car in Top Condition for Fall

Fall Auto Care Month

With their harsh weather conditions, summer and winter usually call for more attention to car maintenance than other times of the year. So as the leaves change color and a chill settles in the air, pay attention to your vehicle. Fall brings rainy weather and sometimes snow. Now is a good time to ensure that the parts of your car designed to deal with extreme weather are in good health. Keep in mind that a light drizzle can become a big problem if your tires or windshield wipers are in bad shape.

Simple Fall Vehicle Care Tips
Follow these simple car care tips for the fall season. These checks should only take a few minutes. They will save you later by preventing problems that the coming season's driving conditions might cause. Contact the Service Department to schedule your appointment.

1.  Inspect the steering & suspension system annually. This includes struts, shock absorbers, and chassis parts like ball joints, tie rod ends and other related elements.

2.  Check the HVAC system. Proper heating and cooling performance is crucial for safety reasons-such as defrosting-and for interior comfort.

3.  Check the tire pressure and tire tread. Uneven wear on tires can mean that one of your tires is underinflated. This affects your car's fuel economy and handling. It can also mean that your tires are out of alignment, causing an uncomfortable ride due to stress on your suspension.

4.  Check headlights and windshield wipers to ensure you can see and be seen. Make sure all exterior and interior lighting is working properly. Replace old wiper blades, so rainy conditions don't adversely affect your driving.

5.  Inspect belts and hoses. They should not be loose, brittle, frayed, cracked, or show signs of excessive wear.

6.  Check the battery and replace it if necessary. Make sure the connection if tight, clean, and corrosion-free.

7.  Look over the exhaust system for damage, leaks, and broken supports or hangers if there's an unusual noise. Exhaust leaks are dangerous and should be corrected immediately.

8.  Inspect engine performance to confirm it's delivering the optimal balance of fuel economy and power, as well as producing the lowest level of emissions.

9.  Check all fluids: power steering, transmission, brake, and engine oil, as well as antifreeze/coolant and windshield washer solvent.

10. Notice the feel of your brakes. If your brakes make scraping sounds or feel spongy and soft when depressed, stopping the car may become difficult in inclement weather.

Mazda CX-9 or CX-5 - Which Mazda SUV Do You Need?

By Colin Ryan

The 2016 Mazda CX-5 and 2016 Mazda CX-9 are both excellent crossover utility vehicles (CUVs). But that probably comes as no surprise because you've done the homework and made up a short list of possible purchases. But wait a moment: what if you're leaning toward one, but might be happy with the other? In one case, that extra space might be worth the extra cash. Or the smaller of the two might be just right, at a price that could mean more options. Let's compare them side by shiny side and see if we can make the picture any clearer.

Passenger Space

The CX-5 seats five. Let's assume the front quarters are spacious enough so we don't have to cite every last number. It's in the second row where things often get tight in compact vehicles. Rear legroom here is 39.3 inches (one inch more than the Honda CR-V), shoulder room is 55.5 inches, and hip room is 53.7 inches.

The CX-9 seats seven. Legroom in the second row is 39.8 inches and 32.4 inches in the third row. Shoulder room runs to 58.7 inches and 56.9 inches respectively, while hip room is 56 inches and 43.7 inches. The second-row seats can recline a little, and it's easy to access the row behind. As is usually the case with seven-seaters, the third row is best suited for kids unless it's a short journey.

Cargo Space

CX-5: floor height is 27.6 inches off the ground. From floor to roof, it's 34.6 inches. With rear seats up, depth is 32.6 inches and width is 57.1 inches. Total volume with the rear seats up is 34.1 cubic feet; fold them down for a maximum of 64.4 cubes in the Sport and 65.4 in the Touring and Grand Touring trims.

CX-9: floor height to the ground is 30.9 inches, floor to roof is 34.8 inches. Trunk length (with second and third-row seats up) is 19 inches - somewhat limited, but that's the price for decent second-row passenger space; with the third row folded, it's 48.9 inches. Width is 58.5 inches. Loadspace volume runs to 17.2 cubic feet with the third row up; fold them down to reveal 48.3 cubes, or fold the second row down as well for a total of 100.7 cubic feet.

Trim Levels

Both SUVs come primarily as front-wheel-drive models, and both come in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trim levels.

A CX-5 Sport rolls on 17-inch alloy wheels as standard, but to get the larger engine means going for at least the Touring trim. Which will also bring a 5.8-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system.

The CX-9 starts out with 18-inch alloys and Sport trim here is really well equipped, but like the 5, Touring brings those active safety features, plus leather upholstery. Grand Touring adds three memory settings for the power-adjustable driver's seat, power tailgate, rain-sensing wipers and 20-inch alloy wheels.

Safety

Side curtain airbags are standard in the CX5, while radarbased cruise control, blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert, and a selfbraking function become available in Touring and Grand Touring versions. In National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash tests, the 2015 CX3 won four stars out of five. It also performed well in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) small front overlap impact test. Like its smaller sibling, the CX9's extra safety features aren't available until Touring trim. It scored four stars in federal crash testing, but didn't do well in the IIHS small front overlap impact.

The Driving Experience

An entrylevel CX5 makes do with 155 hp and 150 lbft of torque from 2.0liter fourcylinder engine, which is best described as adequate rather than fun. So the preferable choice might be to go for the 2.5liter four and enjoy a more lively 184 hp and 185 lbft. Either way, at least the CX5 has a chassis that deals with corners better than most rivals. A potential CX9 buyer probably has fine handling low on the list of priorities, but it's still composed and capable, which is always a good trait to have. It can certainly deal with the energetic 273 hp and 270 lbft of torque dished out by its 3.7liter V6 engine.

Decision Time

If it matters, the CX5 can tow up to 2,000 pounds; the CX9's maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds. It should also be noted that the CX5 has slightly revised styling for the 2016 model year, while the CX9 is due for an update soon.

Sometimes people buy bigger vehicles than they really need, often out of habit. The CX5 will be easier to park and easier on gas. If your rear passengers are below adult size and not that numerous, a  wellequipped CX5 could be just the ticket.

There's no point in hauling around empty space that's not being regularly used . However, if road trips involving members of the soccer team are anticipated, you'll probably have to stretch to the CX9.

Although that's hardly a bad thing.

MAINTENANCE TIPS FOR YOUR MAZDA

Vehicle Checklist for Back-to-School Carpool Season

School carpool season is upon us and the non-profit Car Care Council reminds drivers to make sure their vehicles are kid-safe and road ready with a five-point checklist:

1.      Check lights and wipers for visibility. Check wiper blades for signs of wear and replace if necessary.

2.      Get an annual brake inspection.. Schedule a brake inspection and look for warning signs that your vehicle may need brake services, such as an illuminated brake light or screeching, grinding or clicking noises when applying the brakes.

3.      Check tires for under inflation or excessive wear. Check tire pressure and refill underinflated tires, including the spare, and look for uneven wear and check tread depth.

4.      Make sure everyone is buckled up. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website has important tips on seat belt fit and position.

"Back-to-school time is hectic for most families, but scheduling a complete vehicle inspection is time well spent," said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. "Knowing your vehicle was checked by a professional technician will give you peace of mind and make all those trips to school and activities safer and less stressful."

Mazda CX-9 Crossover Balances Style With Value, Power With Economy

Inside and out, here is a beautiful family car that is more premium than mainstream.

The police officer circled back, saying, "I gotta stop you, man."

"Is that the new Mazda CX-9?" he asked, standing up his motorcycle and extending his hand.

Indeed it was. In its "soul red metallic" paint (an extra $300), the three-row crossover that is large on the inside but sleek on the outside stuck out like the retractable dome atop the Milwaukee Brewers' Miller Park, where we had parked for the afternoon.

For people like our officer friend, whose wife owns the discontinued CX-7, the distinct Kodo, or "soul of motion," design philosophy of Mazda stands out from cookie-cutter crossovers and middling midsize sedans.

Mazda's "muscular beauty" is defined by a wide wheelbase and stance typically called athletic, complemented by a long-but-low nose with the front windshield set back as in sports coupes.

No longer sharing platforms with Ford's midsize crossover, the CX-9 looks better than the competition and its predecessor.

It looks better on the Mazda6 midsize sedan, which shares the platform, but on 20-inch wheels and a larger, taller body, "It kinda sticks out, yeah," Officer C. agreed.

It's forgivable on what otherwise inside and out is a beautiful family car that is more premium than mainstream. Mazda calls the completely redesigned second-generation vehicle its flagship, and it is setting sail for people who like nice-looking, well-performing machines without getting gouged in price.

The $42,270 price tag on the Grand Touring trim did make Officer C. whistle and shake his head. "Good thing I'm getting overtime." (Base price is $33,320.)

Over a soda, Officer C. checked out the black leather seats and soft dash materials infusing the cabin with comfort and style. The chrome band on the dash winds through the console controls, steering wheel and doors, offering a sleek and subtle contrast of sporty elegance.

The CX-9 comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine in a class crowded with V-6 engines. Mazda's SkyActiv powertrain does more with less, topping Ford for best-in-class fuel economy. It delivers a whopping 310 pound-feet of torque at 2,000 rpm, providing plenty of punch and power, with an ability to tow 3,500 pounds.

Pair that with no turbo lag and the CX-9 becomes a sporting proposition, according to Officer C., who initially thought it might be a replacement for the family hauler. This fun-to-drive large crossover will be his, especially since he'll be able to tow his bikes or a small boat.

Nimble and lightfooted on the highway, the CX-9 has more than enough torque to execute any passing move, and it's more agile than top-heavy on and off ramps and into turns.

In heavy-footed driving, the six-speed automatic transmission goes deep in the rpm band before shifting, though it purrs around town in low rpms at slow speeds. It is barely audible at idle. The CX-9's ability to transition seamlessly from quiet highway cruising to spirited aggressive passing impressed me more each time I drove it.

There is a similar subtle grace on the inside. The light-weighting that accompanies SkyActiv powertrains has been said to cause a louder interior ride, but Mazda smoothed that out with interior padding. It's quiet on the highway.

Adaptive cruise control keeps the car at a set distance away from the vehicle in front, whether accelerating or decelerating in traffic, and works with lane assist to keep the car on track. We were able to use it in congested areas where traffic slowed to 40 mph, then got back up to 70.

2017 MAZDA 6

The midsize sedan market has always been a bit not in its proper place and obviously unable to readily garner the right attention from its consumers as compared to its rivals. It is quite a shame since the 2017 Mazda 6 segment prides itself as being the best in terms of cabin refinement, driving enjoyment, fuel economy and other available features.

To add on, the Mazda 6 has one of the most distinctive as well as attractive designs that goes along with its amazing sporty comportment while on the road. The most impressive quality of the sedan is its combination performance and fuel mileage.

The Mazda 6 is arrayed with the i-Eloop system which is optional on the grand touring trim, this earns it an EPA which is estimated at 32mpg in combined driving mode. This makes it right at the top among the midsize non hybrid sedan, gasoline fuelled vehicles.

When it comes to acceleration, it is more than adequate whether you are driving through the city traffic or getting up on the highway speeds. Apart from that it also brags of an accurate steering and relatively agile make it fun to handle on the occasional back road or the circular highway on ramp.

2017 Mazda6 Exterior & Interior

The 2017 Mazda 6 midsize sedan is a five passenger vehicle which comes in three trim levels which are sport, touring and grand touring.

The main features on the base sport includes a telescoping and tilt steering wheel, alloy wheels of 17 inch, cruise control, air conditioning, full power accessories, Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity, a multi-informational display, a premium sound system an USB/iPod interface as well as an auxiliary jack.

On the top of the line touring trim it adds up a satellite radio, 19" alloy wheel, a keyless ignition, a cross rear traffic alerts, keyless entry, a premium vinyl upholstery, a sliding console armrest, a climate control as well as a configurable driver seat.

It is also adorned with an optional package that bundles a moon roof/sunroof, a premium Bose audio system as well as a satellite radio and all this is for the 6 touring with the automatic transmission.

Others include LED headlights, drivers side mirrors, side heated mirrors, automatic wipers, LED taillights, leathery upholstery, unique front end styling, automatic wipers, lane assist and configurable driver seat.

Mazda 6 Sedan has also been installed with standard safety features which include traction control, front side airbags, an antilock disc brakes, full length side curtain airbags, stability control and an active front head restraints.

Apart from the manual transmission sport it has an all surround camera and an automatic emergency notification in the event of a crash and optional rear parking sensors across the board and this is standard on all trims.

Additionally, the Grand touring and touring trims have a blind spot and a rear cross traffic monitoring.

2017 Mazda 6 Engine

The 2017 Mazda 6 front wheel drive is powered by a 2.5 L four cylinder engines that has a horsepower of 184 as well as 185 pound feet of torque. The Touring and Sport model may be matched with a six speed manual or a six speed automatic transmission while the Grand touring only comes with the automatic.

When tested by Edmunds, Mazda which is automatically equipped 6 had a top speed of 60 miles per hour in 7.6 sec. and this is a top time for a midsize sedan with a base four cylinder. The sedan's EPA fuel economy is quite amazing.

It stands a 31 miles per gallon combined at 26mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway and this is for the automatic transmission vehicle and 29 miles per gallon combined at 25mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway, with the manual.

The fuel economy rises to an appealing 32 miles per gallon and this is with the Touring's optional i-Eloop feature.

Summer Car Maintenance Checklist

With the official first day of summer quickly approaching, you want to take the time to make sure your car is ready! Summer it is the perfect time to take care of any maintenance you have not had done. At Schwartz Mazda, routine car maintenance is always important. Here at Schwartz Mazda, we have created a summer car maintenance checklist with everything you should take care of so your car is in tip-top shape for summer.

  • Get an oil change - Oil is essential to keep your engine running smoothly and with high temperatures, summer is an especially important time to have this service done to prevent overheating due to a clogged or unlubricated engine.
  • Tire maintenance -  Spring and winter can cause excessive wear on tires. You will want to make sure you have your tires rotated to prevent the front tires from wearing out before the back tires, and vice versa. You will also want to check the tread and the pressure, since low tread is a sign of weak tires and low tire pressure makes tires weaker. Always keep tires filled to the appropriate pressure and replace tires if the tread is below the necessary level.
  • Belts and hoses inspection  - You should have your tires and hoses checked. Keep an eye out for cracks, leaks or any other signs of wear. Changes in temperature can often make worn hoses and belts worse.
  • Check your coolant - Make sure you get your cooling system flushed regularly, usually once a year, to remove debris and any old coolant that may break down and cause bigger issues. You also will want to make sure your car always has enough coolant during extra hot days to avoid overheating. Top off the coolant as needed and carry extra with you just in case.
  • Check your A/C  - Check and make sure your air conditioning is functioning properly. It should be blowing at the correct speed and the air should be cold. If it seems that something may be wrong, contact our service department to have it checked out. Catching issues early on are often much easier fixes than an entire system overhaul.
  • Check your battery - Have the battery tested to make sure it is still in good condition. If you catch the issue ahead of time you can replace the battery before it completely goes out.

2016 Mazda CX-9:
Family Vehicles Can Be Sexy

By Jill Ciminillo
Automotive Editor

I have been a fan of the Mazda CX-9 since I first drove it at the original press preview back in 2007. I loved how it drove, and I loved the sleek design. At the time, it was one of the first non-luxury cars I saw that had blind-spot monitoring and a keyless ignition.

It was innovative and comfortable. It sat 7 and still managed to be fun to drive. The first-gen CX-9 proved to me that family haulers didn't have to be boring.

So, to say the all-new 2016 model had a lot to live up to is an understatement. Luckily, the folks at Mazda came through with another sexy beast.

I never thought I could be mesmerized by an SUV, but when I first saw the CX-9 on the pedestal at the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show, I stared. I left the display. I came back, and I stared some more. I did the same thing at the Detroit Auto Show, the Chicago Auto Show and then again in New York. It's something about the new liquid-looking Machine Gray Metallic paint combined with the svelte lines that kept me coming back for more.

The CX-9 is the latest iteration of the Mazda "KODO - Soul of Motion" design philosophy, and I think it's one of the best implementations yet. From the aggressive, forward-leaning grille all the way to the long sweeping lines surrounding the vehicle, this new 7-passenger crossover looks like it's moving even when it's not.

At the  press preview for the CX-9, Robert Davis, the senior vice president of U.S. operations for Mazda North America, discussed the changing face of Mazda. He noted that 40 percent of the previous-generation CX-9s sold were in the Grand Touring trim. He also said that the current CX-5 is close to 50 percent Grand Touring. This is why you're going to see something novel in the CX-9 for a non-luxury brand: real wood, stamped aluminum accent pieces and Nappa leather. Yeah, in a Mazda.

Davis calls it "Mazda Premium," which is code for a luxurious experience from design to technology to craftsmanship.

This newest Mazda has a whole host of available high-tech safety features and some pretty nifty gadgets. I was particularly fond of the head-up display that projects onto the windshield instead of using a weird plastic window that pops out of the dash behind the steering wheel. Other available features include navigation, blind-spot monitoring, smart city braking, adaptive front lighting, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and lane keep assist.

The CX-9 is also the last vehicle in the Mazda lineup to get the Skyactiv treatment. Thus the 3.7-liter, V-6 engine from the previous generation has been replaced with a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This means there is a slight loss of horsepower - 23 hp to be exact - but there is a significant increase in torque. It was 270 pound-feet in the V-6, and it goes up to 310 pound-feet in the 4-cylinder. Engineers at the press preview stressed that this was done on purpose based on real-world driving habits. The end result is more torque up front for quicker launches and better fuel efficiency overall.

The CX-9 is available in front and all-wheel-drive configurations, and EPA estimates city/highway fuel economy to be 22/28 mpg and 21/27 mpg, respectively.

Our day-long drive was plenty of time to realize how fun this vehicle is to drive. Our drive route consisted of several twisty bits that were better suited to a sports car than an SUV. Yet the CX-9 managed to surprise and delight me and my driving partner. It handled the curves very well, hugging the road. We almost forgot we were driving a 7-passenger vehicle.

The CX-9 also did very well on long highway stretches, providing a comfortable and quiet ride. And when I say quiet, I mean virtually silent. Mazda paid a lot of attention to noise, vibration and harshness, creating a thicker floorpan and adding more insulation between the floor and carpet. The windows also have better seals and sound-absorbing acoustic glass. The result is tomb-like silence while driving at highway speeds. I was very impressed.

The new CX-9 will have a four-tiered trim system, starting at slightly more than $31K and topping out at about $45K. Key standard features at each trim include:

•    Sport: Three rows of seat for up to 7 passengers and three-zone automatic climate control.

•    Touring: Leather seats, heated front seats, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, passive entry and push-button start.

•    Grand Touring: The full suite of i-ActiveSense safety features, 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels and power sliding-glass moonroof.

•    Signature: Nappa leather seats, genuine Rosewood interior trim and leather-wrapped steering wheel with red box-stitching.

I love almost everything about the exterior design of the CX-9. The downward sloping hood casts a mean side profile, and the attention to detail - right down to the ridged lines inside the taillights - is impressive. The styling overall is bold yet elegant.

We were driving the Signature trim, and the interior was downright sumptuous. The seats were comfortable enough for 6 hours of seat time, and I liked the bright "Auburn" color of the leather. Mazda paid significant attention to detail here as well, giving the interior an up-level feel with soft surfaces and reverse stitching.

The CX-9 is a beautifully designed vehicle inside and out. It's well-powered and efficient. And it makes sense for both suburban and urban environments because it's both comfortable and easy to maneuver.

SERVICE RECALLS & NEWS

Takata Airbag Recall Expansions: Ferrari, Fiat Chrysler, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru

Six more automakers have specified cars that are now part of the expanded Takata airbag recalls, with Ferrari and Jeep joining the master list for the first time. All of the recalls involve the passenger-side front airbag.

First up, Ferrari. Last July, the automaker recalled certain cars in its entire 2015 lineup for Takata airbags, although those airbags had nothing to do with defective inflators shooting shrapnel. Now, 2820 cars in the U.S. are under recall for this problem, including the 2009-2011 California and 2010-2011 458 Italia.

Mazda is recalling 731,628 cars. Newly added models include the 2009-2011 Mazda 6 and RX-8; 2005-2006 MPV; and 2007-2011 CX-7 and CX-9. Previously recalled cars in this total include the 2003-2008 Mazda 6; 2006-2007 Mazdaspeed 6; 2004 MPV; and the 2004-2008 RX-8.

As before, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is dividing up the recalls into three zones, so that not all cars in all regions will be immediately fixed.
